The puzzles are also just *okay*, some are connected to the story in clever ways, but are never very involved mechanically. Most of the time you just search around a few branches. This isn't exactly System Shock 2, you're never given a ton of room to move around. The first two are fine, if a little underdeveloped. The gameplay is split into three categories, exploration, puzzles, and monsters. Everything from the distorted voices of the creepy machines to the rushing currents at the ocean floor, it all sounds like you'd expect. The sound design is solid, with lots of great samples filling the soundscape. The game lacks any good AA, but that's sort of trend with Frictional's games. Visuals are crisp and the underwater research facility of Pathos-II is detailed as it is decrepit. Speaking generally about the game, the presentation is good. While the WAU is an interesting concept, it's integration into the B-plot really hurts the game. And the sections that devote themselves to that-the hide-and-seek games with monsters-are poor. Along with that, it attempts to be a scary horror game. Even though the sci-fi elements Soma explores are far from new, they're packaged in a way that's unique to experience. It's important to note how well the story fits the medium.
